| In October the long-awaited start of the new 'Super Borovec' ski resort was finally given the go ahead. The new resort will engulf and replace the old Borovec ski resort. The idea for this project has been around for over 5 years and has gone through various problems, including the assassination of the main shareholder two years ago. The new investment structure has been set up by the new majority shareholders, including Equest Investments, the National Investment Fund of Oman, the municipality of Samokov and Glavbolgarstroi. Over €500 million will be invested over next 5 years.
The new investment plans include development of over 600,000 sq.m. hotels and holiday apartments, including 4 and 5-star hotels and two storey alpine chalets, 19 new ski runs with total length of over 40 km, 10 new ski-lifts, two golf clubs, tennis courts and other sport facilities. Unlike most resorts, investors have stressed their plans to build up the infrastructure first, including new roads, sewage plants and parking spaces, before launching their main attractions and hotel complexes.
The project will start this year and is scheduled for completion in 2012. Facilities will be located in four main areas – Borovec (1,100 meters), Banderata (1,460 meters), Gvardeiska Polyana (1,620 meters) and Byalata Polyana (1,310 meters). The project also includes the building of a new Rila motorway, going through Dupnica, Vakarel, Samokov and Vitinja and providing 35-40 minutes travel time from Sofia.
